I wanted to discuss this subject because all of us are so busy in our personal/business lives that we have not stopped to think about who we are or what we think of ourselves. Our relationships extend to our immediate family, friends, co-workers, church members and also to our extended family members including our parents and siblings. These relationships, particularly with our parents and siblings, have made a lasting impact on us and have contributed greatly to who we are and what we think about ourselves. For example, as a teenager, I witnessed how my parents valued spirituality and family values. Today, I am a replica of what they instilled in me. My parents, however, were strict and believed in hard-work, so unfortunately, I followed their leading and became a strict parent when my children were younger. Hard-work had its advantages and disadvantages. I was able to succeed in college but continued my life thinking that hard-work was required at all times. Because of this, I sacrificed times that I could have allotted for more family entertainment. Many of you can attest to how relationships with parents, siblings, spouses, friends, co-workers and church members have greatly impacted your lives and have left an indelible mark on who you are and what you think about yourselves.
You want to be careful, however, to understand the facts about who you are and how you should think of yourselves. It is not enough to have others determine who you are by the standards that they have set for you. If that has occurred in your life, it’s not too late to rebound. Yield yourselves to God’s Holy Spirit who can renew your minds (Romans 12:2) and help you to understand your position in Christ. Your position in Christ determines who you are. You are blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). You are accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6). This means you are a child of God with all rights and privileges. You need not feel underprivileged because greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world (1 John 4:4). The Lord who loves you has redeemed you from sin by His grace-a free gift to you (Ephesians 2:8). God loved you before the foundation of the world (John 17:24) so you never have to feel unloved. If you have never received true love, receive His love today. His love is greater than any love that you can receive. He knew you before you were born (Psalm 139:13-14) and you are special in his sight. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Hold onto these truths. Do not give in to false views and feelings of who you are or what others may make you think of yourself.
May God bless you.
