My grand-son Matthew is now five weeks old. He weighed 7lbs, 9oz at two weeks and 9lbs,15oz at 4 weeks. He is holding up his head even at five weeks. Matthew sleeps for three hours during the day and at night. While he is sleeping, he makes various sounds and moves his hands and feet. My daughter Monique worried about that, but I reminded her that he is only a baby getting used to the outside world. He loves to snuggle under his mother’s side during breastfeeding at night, and he ends up sleeping on the bed with her. Mom is transitioning him from the bed to the basinet.
Monique is getting used to the routines of motherhood and is enjoying special moments with her new baby. She maintains a balance caring for Matthew. She tries to get plenty of rest but also stays active by exercising and visiting friends. Her in-home exercise routines include a fifteen minute workout three times per week on the treadmill and lunge stretching. She has lost over thirty-nine pounds.
Matthew is finally overcoming the things he hated to do. He did not like to bathe so mom decided to make the water warmer and now he loves his bath. Matthew does not like wet wipes so his mother uses warm baby wash cloths to clean him. When she travels, she uses wet wipes and Matthew is fine with them.
He loves the swing because it’s different. He is comfortable and he is moving. Recently, his dad cut all his nails so Matthew no longer can scratch himself. Mom continues to wash his curly hair to prevent cradle cap, which looks like dandruff but it is flaky.
Matthew is easy to care for. He loves milk. He is alert and strong. He is lovable and sociable. He goes from hand to hand without crying. Recently, Monique visited her school, where she is currently serving as principal and gave a presentation to her sponsors. I held Matthew and showed him off to the students who waved to him as they left the auditorium after their performances. The staff was also happy to see Matthew. Uncle Anthony had a get together to celebrate his son Kaleb’s seventh birthday; some family members got a chance to see Matthew again. Monique visited us parents the following day so we had Matthew all to ourselves. He smiled several times as I spoke to him and eventually slept on my chest.
What a joy to interact with Matthew! You and I experience that same joy when we communicate with our heavenly Father, who knows us (John 13:3), who helps us (Psalm 54:4), who energizes us (Psalm 46:1) and provides for us (Philippians 4:19) as Monique and Costia provide for Matthew. The Lord tells us in Matthew 18:3 that unless we humble ourselves, be converted, and become like children, we shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. We will receive all the blessings of God when we confess our sins, repent, ask for forgiveness, walk humbly before God, listen to his voice and do His will. When we obey God, we will be like little children who respond to their earthly parents’ love, wisdom, and guidance. May God bless you continually.
