On April 18, 2013, citizens of Boston as with other years felt the excitement and the thrill as they took their places next to one another in the race to prove who had the best time. The Marathon gives others who are physically handicapped opportunities to run this race as well. It is a time when Boston and all who come from different countries come together in unity and in love. This year, just as the runners approached the finished line and many bystanders, people with families, realized something awful was happening. Someone was undermining the race, the beauty of the race, the hope that the race gave to so many people. Two brothers originally from Russia and who had lived over ten years in America had executed the bombs they had made and planned. Without a second to think, over two hundred and sixty people were hurt, some losing limbs, three people including an eight year old boy were killed, two officers were hurt, and one MIT officer was shot execution style as he sat in his car.
I do not want to reiterate all the details of this horrific tragedy but the purpose for my writing this article is to give hope and encouragement to the victims and their families. I want to encourage you that you still have life and you are here to make a difference in the life of someone else. Your life is not over. It is not a waste; it has purpose. Bad things happen to good people and it is not your fault that you attended the race with your family. We live in a fallen world, a world mixed with good and evil and sometimes, a good person gets caught up in the mix when evil strikes.
All of us face difficult life- issues daily. Because of this, every individual is prone to ask himself or herself the question: “Why me?” You ask the question when unexpected things happen to you or your loved ones. Yes, it is truly heart-breaking when people die at a young age or die under severe circumstances. Another reason for asking this question is when you are angry at God because you feel that God could have prevented this if He had come to your rescue.
I cannot answer the question why God didn’t come to one’s rescue in cases of deaths from earthquakes, hurricanes or from evil similar to this, but what I know is, that God is still in charge of the whole human race. He said in Jeremiah 29:11 that He has a plan and a future for you. Regardless of how serious you have been hurt or whether your son or daughter was killed, God is still in charge of your life. He loves you and he will see you through your times of sadness, times when you feel weak and feel like giving up. Do not give up. Your time of refreshing will come. Trust in God when you do not envision the solution. Psalm 18:2 states that, “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” God will give you the strength when you are weak. You can lean on Him. He will answer you when you call Him. When life-situations seem overwhelming, turn to God for He is your anchor in the time of storms.
