On Saturday, March 8, 2014, my husband Carl and I attended our daughter Monique’s baby shower which took place at her home, South of Boston. Her once college roommates and close friends who did a marvelous job at her wedding shower, did so again at her baby shower. The room was so beautifully decorated that it gave the guests a warm and cozy feeling. Everyone had a superb time.
Monique’s friends used a jungle theme to decorate the tables, walls, and plants. In the center of each table, was a safari hat surrounded by miniature trucks and animals of all kinds. The plants were decorated to look like trees in a forest. At the right corner of the room, was a table filled with deserts, including a large decorated cake, varied colored cupcakes, chocolate covered strawberries, other interesting and delicious goodies with matching napkins and small paper plates in line with the animal theme. A table located at the left corner of the room had various clear jars filled with an assortment of candies. Tiny striped colored bags to collect the candies and matching napkins relating to the jungle theme were also included on this table. On the right wall a stream of baby clothes hung on a string and on the left wall words depicting the sex of the future baby was written. “IT IS A……”
The food table included a variety of dishes some of which I was happy to prepare. Favorite dishes included curry chicken and roti, Trinidadian rice and peas, barbeque chicken wings and various vegetarian dishes.
Participating in games was the most joyous portion of the shower ranging from figuring the length around Monique’s baby bump to how many tootsie rolls were in a large baby bottle.
The most precious moment of the shower was when Monique began to open her gifts which ranged from a baby car seat, carriage, clothing and album to gift cards. One gift really stood out; it resembled a large cake with ten layers. Each layer was filled with pampers. As Monique removed each layer she was surprised to find other hidden gifts such as lotion and ointment. It was clear that the person who brought the gift used a lot of thought and imagination to create it.
When we take a closer look at life, we recognize that God our Father is the giver of all gifts to us and He has immense creativity and gives to each one of us what we need in layers—when we need them. The key to life is realizing our hidden potential by going deeper and exploring the many gifts and talents that God has given to us. In our daughter’s shower, all the gifts counted as shower of blessings: the gifts on the desert table, those on the candy table, the food table, the decorations on every table, the decoration on all the walls, and the actual gifts given to Monique. Similarly, all your gifts count in expanding God’s kingdom.
Don’t look at the gifts God has given to others, but concentrate on what he has given to you and thank Him for it. The key to life is accepting every gift that God, the Creator of Heaven and earth has given to each of us. A gift can mean your talent, your calling, your spouse, your children or your position in life. God has given us grace for our life-journey and love to give us hope. Let us regard our gifts as a shower of blessings. May God truly bless you.
