Welcome to Insights on Healing a weekly podcast. Today’s Episode is “A Cry for Mercy.” You will learn how David cried to God for mercy and how you can do the same.
I am Joan M. Blake, author, and I am your host. In this podcast I read scripture, pray, read from one of my books, or tell stories of the healing power of God, and how many have found purpose in their lives. I pray that God would bless you and give you hope.
Today’s podcast is taken from Psalm 57, a Psalm of David. I am reading from the NIV version.
Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.
2 I cry out to God Most High,
to God, who vindicates me.
3 He sends from heaven and saves me,
rebuking those who hotly pursue me—[c]
God sends forth his love and his faithfulness.
4 I am in the midst of lions;
I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts—
men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.
6 They spread a net for my feet—
I was bowed down in distress.
They dug a pit in my path—
but they have fallen into it themselves.
7 My heart, O God, is steadfast,
my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and make music.
8 Awake, my soul!
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.
9 I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
10 For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.
Reflection: David cries out for mercy as he fled from King Saul to a Cave. In his cry for mercy, David asks God to take refuge in the shadow of His wings. He reminds God of His saving grace. He describes his situation to God. He exalts God even during the problems he faced. He praises and exalts God. We notice a pattern here of how David approaches God, first he asks for mercy and explains why he knows he would obtain mercy from God. Second, he explains the trouble he is in while exalting God. We learn that we, also can go to God when we are in trouble.
Let us pray: God of the universe, we exalt you, we praise you, and give you thanks for keeping us alive during this pandemic. I pray for listeners who are experiencing trouble on every side that you will lift their burdens Lord and provide for them. I pray for those who have lost loved ones that you will comfort them, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
